The British Museum's Prints and Drawings collection, located several floors above the Royal Anthropological Institute's Anthropology Library, contains an engraving from the 1630s depicting America personified as a woman, adorned with pearls and feathers. In her hand, she holds a human leg, torn from its body in an ostensible act of can- nibalism, while background figures continue to engage in rituals of consumption.
