Para la comprensión de la semiótica de la sátira gráfica es necesario un punto de partida. Hasta ahora no se tiene en Bolivia un trabajo referido a ella, esta es un intento por sistematizar la semiótica de la caricatura. La caricatura se define como el arte de trastocar la realidad para hacerla más risible y comprensible. Los elementos plásticos más básicos del humor gráfico son el punto, la línea, el plano, el color y la textura. El humor tiene dos dimensiones fundamentales, la forma y el fondo. La primera se refiere a la apariencia y la segunda al contenido, al mensaje que emite la gráfica. Dependiendo del medio de comunicación, del artista y la opinión pública a la que se dirige la gráfica tendrá una carga ideológica. Las emociones, movimiento, actitudes, etc., están representados por el dibujo de humor político. La caricatura también utiliza recursos literarios para ampliar la información o aclarar algo dificil de identificar.
